10 Signs You Could Never be a Lifeguard

lifeguard

Written by: Jenna Yesenosky

When we think of the beach and summer vacation, we often think of three things: waves, sand, and lifeguards. Whether we’re getting whistles (annoyingly) blown at us, or we’re scoping out the impossibly beautiful eye candy sitting on top of his chair, we see lifeguards almost every day, for 3 months a year. While we sit and tan in the sun, we may entertain the thought of possibly becoming a lifeguard ourselves. Tanning, relaxing, hanging out with our friends on the beach and getting paid for it? Yes, please! At least, that’s what we think lifeguarding is all about, right? Well, not exactly. Lifeguarding takes a lot of training, a lot of skill, and a lot of patience. So before you lather on your suntan lotion and get ready to save some lives, take a look at these 10 Signs You Could Never Be A Lifeguard:

  1. You burn easily. A fair girl’s worst nightmare: baking in the sun for 8 hours. If you’re not going for the lobster look this summer, you may want to cross lifeguarding off of your “possible jobs” list. Sure, scooping ice cream is wayyy more tedious, but saving your skin is so worth it.
  2. You hate running. Like, despise it. Unfortunately, running miles and miles of beach is in the fine print of a lifeguarding job, not to mention the super intense training.
  3. You hate working out. There’s no shame in skipping the gym and treating yourself to a lazy day on the couch. Sadly, lifeguards work out a ton. How else would they get such amazing abs?
  4. You’re more of an indoors kind of gal. Lifeguarding takes place outside 24/7, 365 days a year. Clouds, rain, hurricane, earthquake, you’ll be outside guarding away, so be prepared!
  5. You can’t swim. This one seems pretty obvious, but hey, you never know.
  6. You’re not a morning person. Lifeguarding means waking up bright and early every morning. If you’re more of a night owl, this job might not be your perfect fit.
  7. You have an irrational fear of sharks (or other sea creatures). Sharks make appearances at the Jersey shore all the time. Lifeguards also double as shark-removal experts, so you’ll be hanging around the ocean’s finest all day.
  8. Your worst enemy is the seagull. One can only imagine how many seagulls try to boldly steal snacks from lifeguards daily. If you’re terrified of seagulls, like I am, be warned that you’ll be spending lots of time up close and personal with them.
  9. You’re bored easily. Half of the time, lifeguarding is just sitting on the beach watching little kids make sandcastles. It’s easy to get bored in a job like this, so patience is definitely key.
  10. You’re not looking for something serious. Although 90% the time you’re sitting around twiddling your thumbs, the other 10% you’re, quite literally, saving someone’s life, which is a pretty big deal. Summer is a time to relax, so if you’re not looking for that kind of responsibility on your time off, you may want to consider some other part-time options.

Yes, lifeguarding is tough, but I’ve never met a lifeguard who didn’t love their job and cherish the memories they’ve made as a guard. It’s also a great way to meet new people and get involved in your shore town community. Hey, if all else fails, at least you’ll have a good tan and some new friends!

Alternate Uses for Your Old Beach Toys

There’s nothing more nostalgic than searching through your attic and stumbling upon your once beloved beach toys. We loved all the classics, like sand buckets (especially the ones shaped like castles, and especially if they were pink), shovels, and Disney princess beach towels. Rather than having our childhood favorites collecting dust, we thought it would be fun to re-purpose our beach toys so we can always be reminded of summers past.

Ornament: Take your favorite shovel, rubber beach toy, or shell you found in one of your old buckets and turn it into a tree ornament or wall hanging. These tips for summer holiday decorations will help you out!

Shovel Garland: If you’re anything like me, you had numerous shovels in an array of shapes and candy-colored hues. Whether you’re hosting a beach inspired party for your besties, or even just to add some summer fun to your room, string your old shovels together and hang them up for a fun, beachy garland. Spruce them up with sequins, paint, and shells or alternate them in-between some twinkle lights!

Storage Bucket: We love the idea of using old beach buckets to hold books, art supplies, or hair accessories in our room. Host a craft night and decorate old sand buckets together with your friends! (Tip: play these best summer songs of all time as you re-make your beach buckets!)

Beach Game: If you’ve got a summer full of beach visitors (hello, birthday weekend with your besties!) then turn your old toys into a new game. This beach bucket toss game would be perfect to set up during a day at the beach!

Beach Towel Quilt: Beach towels were essentially everything when we were younger. There was always that thrill of going into the store and picking out a brand new towel for the summer, adorned in shades of pink and princesses. If you still have a few and don’t mind cutting them up, use them as squares in a beach-inspired quilt. This would make a great blanket for those cold winter months and to have on display in the summer! Here’s a simple beach blanket DIY.

Have you re-purposed any of your old beach toys? Let us know in the comments section below!

The recent blizzard and freezing temperatures have us wanting summer even more than usual. Since we’ve still got a few months to go, we thought we’d satisfy our summer cravings by watching some of our favorite summer TV shows. Whether you’re stuck inside from the blizzard, hosting a sleepover with your besties, or simply wanting to be transported to warmer temperatures for the night, get into some comfy clothes and queue up one of these shows (and maybe even whip up a batch of these cookies to go with the theme):

The OC: California, here we come! Travel to sunny, drama-filled Orange County, CA with this show that follows a group of high schoolers, complete with bad-boy Ryan, popular girls Marisa and Summer, and geeky Seth. Check out all four seasons here.

The Carrie Diaries: This series follows a younger Carrie Bradshaw (of Sex and the City fame) as she navigates high school, boyfriends, and New York City. The second season finds her living in NYC for the summer in the ‘80s, which means big hair, skirts, and drama. Both seasons are on Netflix.

Laguna Beach: A reality show following real-life teenagers in Orange County, Laguna Beach is also where Lauren Conrad made her TV debut. The cast changes in each season, and by season 3 it follows LC’s little sister. Make a batch of our favorite popcorn and get swept up in the drama! You can follow it up with The Hills, when LC moves to LA. All seasons available on Netflix.

Jersey Shore: If you and your bestie need a laugh after a long week of midterms, this show will do the trick. Eight strangers spend their summer months in a beach house in Seaside Heights, NJ and the whole summer is documented, Real World style. You can find all six seasons on MTV.

Perfect Pink Office Supplies

perfect.pink.office.supplies

VERY EXCITING NEWS: Pinkly Perfect is about to get her first ever office! YAY! Starting March 1st, no more working from home, no more deciding to take a nap at 3:30 pm because I was up late Netflixing the night before, and no more days where the only people I physically speak to are my elevator attendant and the barista at Starbucks.

Needless to say I am SO excited! And I can’t wait to be part of the WeWork community and explore a new part of the city! I’m even looking forward to early morning subway rides and hearing “Showtime!” and hoping the group of adolescent break-dancers didn’t catch my eye roll. (I’ll regret that one on March 2nd.)

But what I’m most looking forward to right now is decorating my tiny new home to make it (pinkly) perfect and conducive to running a smooth operation once my website launches. Eeeeee!

So basically whenever I got tired from jumping around my apartment in the past week, I took a little bit of time to scour the internet to find some perfect pink items that will accompany me on this next journey for PP! Take a look at what I found below:

Open Sign

“Open” Instant Download, $5.00 from ColorFiles on Etsy

Even though technically the website will be “open” 24/7, I’ll need a sign to hang in my office so everyone knows this girl means business. If someone walks by thinking they can discuss her theory on How to Get Away with Murder, they can come back at 6 pm. Pinkly Perfect will be in work-mode only mostly.

 Pink Lunchbox

Pink Lunch Box, $36.81 from Walmart

Are lunch boxes geeky? Kind of. Do I care? Nope! Going to Pinkly Perfect’s office is going to feel like the first day of kindergarten so I think a lunch box is really essential. Plus, $36.81 is a steal for this super cute lunch box and two microwaveable containers. Pick one up for school or summer camp!

 Pink.Magazine.Folder

Pink Magazine File, $16.99 from The Container Store

Fact: If I don’t start out super organized, I will never get organized. I plan on buying a bunch of these pink magazine files to house everything from inspiration to invoices.

Want more updates on all the exciting things happening for Pinkly Perfect in 2016 (hint: there’s a lot!)? Follow my instagram @pinklyperfect_inc for daily reminders of summer vacation and exciting photos of Pinkly’s progress! 🙂

Make Over Your S’more

Chocolate.Marshmallow.Smore

Written by: Maureen Devenny

Being that we’re supposed to get a blizzard this weekend, it’s super important to plan ahead and make sure we have enough fun indoor activities that can keep us busy while we pretend our Algebra homework doesn’t exist. If your choice includes being glued to the TV, check out these Best Summer Movies. But if you plan on spending the weekend curled up enjoying a more typical of summer sweet treat, keep reading for some delicious variations of the classic S’more.

S’mores need no improvement–their crunchy graham crackers, melty chocolate, and gooey marshmallows make the perfect dessert. But, as much as we love s’mores, we’re aware that there can be too much of a good thing, s’mores included. After all, variety is the spice of life!

So, to be able to enjoy s’mores all weekend long without fatigue, below are the best alternative s’mores recipes. Try one or try them all; which is your favorite?

1) Stick with the Basics

There’s not much wrong with s’mores as they are. But they can always withstand experimentation.

Introduce a sauce: salted caramel is all the rage, and there’s no reason that can’t make its way on our s’mores. Same goes for Nutella or peanut butter.

Go loco with your choco: who said you have to stick with Hershey’s milk chocolate? Try dark chocolate to turn up the volume; use chocolate flavored with sea salt or chilies to make over your s’more.

2) Think of Pie

S’mores are the sandwich version of pie. Instead of graham cracker crust on just the bottom, s’mores are sandwiched between two layers of graham crackers (twice the deliciousness!). So, we turned to our favorite pie recipes for some ideas.

Lemon Meringue s’mores: swap out the chocolate for lemon curd. The toasted marshmallows are still a great stand-in for browned meringue.

Grasshopper s’mores: This minty pie finds its way onto s’mores. Swap out the regular milk chocolate for a peppermint pattie. If you want your grasshopper s’more to taste super authentic, use chocolate graham crackers.

3) Use Fruit

Dessert doesn’t always have to be a gut-buster. Fruit will lighten up your dessert, and add nutrients!

Strawberry Short(cracker): strawberry shortcake is great, and there’s no reason it wouldn’t be delicious on a s’more. Slice ripe strawberries thinly, or use strawberry jam; layer toasted marshmallows and whipped cream on top.

Pina-Chocolada: taste summer all winter long with these tropical s’mores. Thinly slice pineapple and lay on your crackers; place a chocolate-coconut candy (we like Mounds) on top.

Packing Tips for Your Warm Winter Getaway

Packing.Tips

Written by: Amanda Mooney

Time to trade in your parkas and combat boots for something a little looser. With the holiday season officially over and the temperatures dropping, the thought of the frigid months ahead can be daunting. That is why now is the perfect time to plan a getaway to somewhere a little bit warmer. Here are some helpful packing tips to ensure your vacation is all you dreamed it would be:

  • Bring sunscreen. Seriously, stock up on this. Yes, I totally understand wanting to walk around your hometown with a sun-kissed glow while everyone else is dealing with dry, winter skin, but it’s not worth it in the long run.
  • Roll your clothes. This helps utilize all of your suitcase space. Lay your shirts flat on the ground, fold the arms to the center, and roll tightly from the bottom. The same technique works for pants and skirts.
  • Line the bottom of your suitcase with a trash bag. Once filled, place another on top and zip up. This helps reduce wrinkles. Let’s be real, who wants to iron on vacation? (Or ever.)
  • Slip your socks into your shoes and wrap belts along the interior of the bag. The more space in your luggage, the more space for souvenirs!
  • Bring a plastic bag for laundry. Even though I recommend planning out your outfits beforehand to avoid lugging any unnecessary weight across the globe, this plan isn’t fool-proof.
  • Section off your clothes in plastic zipper bags. This keeps you organized and if you want, you have the option of living out of your suitcase for your stay.
  • If you’re flying, never check essential items. Airlines are not immune to mistakes, so keep your valuables on you. Panicking over a lost suitcase full of all your essentials is definitely not the best way to start your vacation.
  • Remember: accessories are your best friend. No one wants to be an outfit repeater, but bringing your entire closet with you on vacation (unless you’re Elle Woods or Cher Horowitz) isn’t really an option. With the help of some red lipstick, heels, and a statement necklace, you can rock your daytime romper into the evening.
  • Bring comfortable shoes. I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but I have been a firsthand witness to my sister forgetting her sneakers at home and having to climb Diamond Head in less than comfortable flats.
  • There isn’t a universal electric socket, meaning your iPhone charger might not plug into your hotel’s socket depending on where you are visiting. A solution? Buy a universal outlet plug that fits into multiple sockets. Now that your phone’s at 100%, snap a few photos and enjoy the sun!

Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to the Best Self-Tanning Lotions

Self Tanning Lotion

Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to the Best Self-Tanning Lotions

Written by: Jenna Yesenosky

Every girl loves a good tan. Maybe it’s because a tan acts as a constant reminder of all the lazy days we spent soaking up the sun, or maybe it’s an unspoken contest, something we get to compare with our friends on the first day of school. Whatever the appeal is, a good tan is hard to find, especially when it’s 32 degrees and snowing outside. Whether you’re trying to get a good glow for prom, or you’re just ready to give your skin a wake up call without the worry of damaging UV rays, look no further. Here is Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to Self-Tanning Lotions, one for every scenario under the sun (pun intended).

If you’re looking for a gradual tan, try Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, a tried and true veteran, or Saint Tropez’s Gradual Tan Everyday Moisturizer if you’re looking to splurge a bit. These two self-tanners build gradually on your skin, leaving subtle color that will have people wondering how you got such a natural looking tan without ever going on vacation.

If you’re looking for a quick bronzing tan, try Victoria’s Secret Instant Bronzing Spray. This spray is great for when you’re looking to get a quick, 24 hour glow. Spray it on before you go out with your girls and wash it off at the end of the night. This product is great for anyone who wants to test the self-tanning waters before jumping in, or anyone who just needs a tan for one night. The results may be more fleeting, but less commitment and less hassle makes this product a go to for on-the-go.

If you’re looking for a bronzing suntan lotion, try Australian Gold’s line of suntan lotions and sprays. Not only do Australian Gold products smell like a Hawaiian vacation in a bottle, they also give a bit of color while protecting your skin from the sun’s rays (and premature wrinkles). The extent of Australian Gold products range from regular old suntan lotion, to bronzing sprays similar to the one above, to lotions with built in self-tanner. These convenient products knock out two birds with one stone: protecting you from a wicked sunburn while giving you the color you’re trying to achieve by laying in the sun in the first place.

If you’re looking for a nice face tanner, try Jergen’s Natural Glow Healthy Complexion Facial Moisturizer, the sister product of Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, and a drugstore favorite. If you’re worried about breaking out and you don’t mind spending a little more money, try Clinique Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion. Clinique products are notorious for being easy on the skin, and this product is no exception. Apply either of these lotions if you want an even tan all over, both face and body.

Whatever the occasion, whatever the reasoning, self-tanning is a lifesaver for proms and impromptu winter vacations alike. I know I’ll be breaking out my tanning products very soon, and I hope you will too, with the help of this guide to the best self-tanning lotions!

Where Do Broken Hearts Go? How to Cope with the 1D Breakup

One Direction Breakup

As if we didn’t need anything else as miserable as the 25 degree weather this week.

Unfortunately on Wednesday, our favorite band of ridiculously charming boys responsible for summer anthems like “Live While We’re Young” and “Best Song Ever” decided to call it quits. For good. Because I am personally devastated and wasn’t ready to never hear a new One Direction song to instantly become obsessed with, I’m listing some coping mechanisms below to help me as well as any other girl reading this while listening to “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” on repeat.

Ice Cream

It may not feel like it now but I guarantee a big bowl of mint chocolate chip topped with whipped cream will help you feel better. When your crush didn’t ask you to the Soph Hop or you got a B+ in Geometry, didn’t some ice cream help you momentarily forget for at least a little? It did. And even though right now you’d rather take a B+ in all your classes to get 1D back together, it’ll do the trick for a quick distraction.

Reunion Tours

It’s a fact: all the greatest boy bands do a reunion tour. Being that my best friends and I went to a Backstreet Boys concert last summer, I can tell you from personal experience that the reunion tours are better than the originals. You’ll still know all the words and dance moves to your favorite songs and you’ll feel 13 again. Maybe in ten years “Story of My Life” will even be more meaningful for you!

Prom Dates

If you’re a girl who desperately wants to make a YouTube video asking Harry Styles to prom, THIS IS YOUR YEAR. Since One Direction is no longer a group, you’ve got a better chance of him saying yes. If you want an even better chance, ask them all through different social media accounts. One of them has got to be free!

Vintage

For some reason, things that are vintage just seem cooler. So now you’re allowed to say you’re into “vintage pop.” Also, that One Direction t-shirt you have? Vintage!

The Memories

One Direction may not release any new albums but their music will never go out of style. You will still be able to listen to “Drag Me Down” on the way to school each morning or “Night Changes” and “One Thing” while you daydream about your crush. Luckily they were so wonderful that we’re actually left with a perfect legacy to enjoy!

The Best DIY Caramel Corn Recipes

Written by: Jenna Yesenosky

Eating handfuls of caramel corn while strolling the boardwalk is a Jersey shore tradition that has been a part of the East-coast summer lifestyle since long before I can remember. Whether you buy it right from the boardwalk or from your trusty neighborhood Boy Scout troop, everyone enjoys snacking on this salty and sweet treat, especially in the summer! Now you don’t have to wait until June to get your hands on this delicious snack, you can make it at home with these three easy DIY recipes.

If you’re a true caramel corn lover, but you don’t have time to slave over your stove, try this No-Bake Recipe for plain, traditional caramel corn straight off the Jersey boards. Start this recipe 5 minutes before you sit down to watch an episode of your favorite show and it’ll be ready by the first commercial break!

If you’re looking to jazz up your plain-Jane caramel corn, try this Deluxe Caramel Corn Recipe. It takes a bit more time, and some oven work, but the results are so worth it. Perfect for a girls’ night in or a summer-themed party, this recipe is a go-to snack for any event you’ll be hosting in 2016.

If you’re a gal who has had caramel corn every summer of her life and is looking for somewhat of a switch-up, try this Caramel Corn Chocolate Bar Recipe. These bars have all the nostalgia of traditional caramel corn, along with a twist that keeps things interesting. Made with just 5 simple ingredients, these bars are fast and simple. They’re a lot less messy than regular caramel corn too, which makes them a great treat for when you’re on the go.

Whichever way you’re eating your caramel corn this winter, hopefully you’ll be able to transport yourself back to the Jersey shore summer lifestyle with these 3 easy recipes!

Perfect Pink Accessories to Get You Through Winter Blues

One of my favorite things about summer is that pink seems to be very prevalent when shopping for clothes and accessories. In fact, my pink wardrobe increases exponentially as soon as Memorial Day rolls around and I love it! But unfortunately, in the winter, the blacks and greys replace the pinks and aquas and create an overall more subdued (read: super boring) vibe. Luckily for us all, however, with Pantone naming Rose Quartz the color of the year, we’re likely to see a lot more pink hitting the stores we love! Below are some great colder-weather finds that are a perfect shade of pink.

Speckled Knit Infinity Scarf, BCBGeneration, $22.80

Screen Shot 2016-01-01 at 10.09.30 PM

It may have taken a bit longer for the colder temperatures to arrive, but we’ve officially hit the scarf-and-gloves-are-now-100%-necessary territory and if you don’t have a pink scarf yet, this BCBGeneration one is perfect! It’s the prettiest shade of pink and light enough to throw on over your sweater when it gets cold in history class!

Ice Cream Cone Mug, Shoptiques, $15.50

Screen Shot 2016-01-01 at 9.56.10 PM

A mug with a pink ice cream cone is way better than any other mug for your early morning coffee or your nighttime hot chocolate while watching Pretty Little Liars and smile-texting your crush. Shoptiques sells this mug for only $15.50 and it’ll be perfect all year, even once summer rolls around.

Cozy Sock Slippers, Target, $12.99

Screen Shot 2016-01-01 at 10.05.43 PM

As soon as you get inside after a long day at school, trade your kilts and tights for sweatpants and these pink cozy sock slippers from Target and I guarantee you will instantly forget about that pesky A- on last week’s Algebra test. Something about cable knit in the winter is so magical that these slippers are just perfect to add into our winter lounge wardrobe.

Velvety Plus Throw, Kohl’s, $44.99

Screen Shot 2016-01-01 at 10.03.42 PM

Reading your Brit Lit requirements is way easier when cozied up on the couch with a blanket and this one from Kohl’s features a pretty pink pattern that’ll definitely keep the mood up no matter if you’re a Jane Austen fan or not. Even once the warmer temperatures arrive before we know it (here’s hoping!), this blanket would look great draped over the bottom of your bed.
