Must-Have Sunscreens for Summer

Written by: Maureen Devenny

Sunscreen is a necessity for healthy skin. But from potential breakouts to a distinctive smell to a greasy feeling on your skin, applying sunscreen can feel like a real chore. Luckily, we live in the year 2016, where there are plenty more options than the sunscreens we were slathered with as kids. Here are some new and improved sunscreens we can’t wait to try out for summer 2016. (And please remember to talk to your dermatologist about the sunscreen that is right for you).

Breakout Danger Zone

Summer can be a tricky time for breakouts, since limited sun exposure can help clear up acne, but the extra sweating you’re doing can clog those pores right back up. Protect your face from sun damage and pimples at the same time with Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen–it’s tried-and-true for a reason. Another option is the Murad Oil-Control Mattifying Sunscreen, which is sold as part of Murad’s Acne Control Starter Kit–this lotion not only fights acne with tea tree oil, but also mattifies to reduce shine. Sounds like a good deal to us!

Greasy Feeling

It’s hard to feel refreshed if you’re covered in greasy sunscreen. Luckily, MDSolarSciences Quick Dry Body Spray has you covered–literally!–and dry in no time. For the face, we like Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist, which controls shine and sets makeup. We love a product that multitasks!

“Sunscreen Smell”

As a perfume person, it is heartbreaking when my fair skin forces me to douse myself in sunscreen over the summer and completely lose the scent of my perfume. But thank goodness that there are sunscreen options out there that don’t leave you smelling like Coppertone all summer! We love the Fresh Cucumber scent of Coola Sport Continuous Spray (also available in Tropical Coconut). Not only does it smell great, but the spray-on application gets you back to your great beach read just a little faster.

Happy sunbathing!

Incorporating Pink Into Your Prom Look

I’m not quite sure how this happened but somehow we’re already approaching Prom season. If you’re at an all-girls high school, now’s the time to make sure you don’t miss any parties so you can meet a cute guy to avoid trying to get set up. And if you’re at a co-ed school, (I guess?) you’re hoping you’re not the only one of your friends that doesn’t get asked. While the date is super important to having fun at prom, the more crucial factor is to make sure your entire ensemble’s on point.

For my Junior Prom, I decided to make my own dress so I had a much easier time finding and rocking the perfect color pink. But if you’re going the simpler (read: smarter) route and buying off the rack, finding a pink that isn’t too pale or too neon or too bubble-gum that you can envision working with your soon-to-be spray tan is really difficult. That’s why trying to incorporate the color pink into your accessories may actually work out better for you. See some tips below:

In my opinion, the most fun way to rock some pink at prom this year is through costume jewelry. You can also save yourself some cash this way if you buy a more simple gown and dress it up with some jewelry from Bauble Bar or H&M. If your dress’s a solid color, think about picking out this rose gold necklace from H&M or these pink and gold statement earrings from Bauble Bar to really impress your date and friends. The best part is that this jewelry can last you all summer, dressing up a plain tank before you meet up with your friends on the boardwalk!

For the gals with dates, look forward to receiving a beautiful bouquet or corsage picked out just for you by your date’s mom. Because boys in high school are clueless, they will most likely ask you what color your dress is. (I’m pretty sure they don’t actually know why they’re asking you this question, so you have some leeway with how you respond.) If you plan on rocking black, navy, grey, or white, pink flowers would complement the look perfectly! So tell your boy the color and add in “It’d look great with pink!” and cross your fingers that he’ll show up with a tiny bouquet of beautiful pink roses or a corsage tied together with pink ribbon.

Almost as fun as picking out the perfect prom dress is finding the perfect pair of shoes to go along with your look. Instead of choosing shoes that go with your dress, pick out a pair that make your dress! The above pink satin shoes with crystal accents from Betsey Johnson would look perfect or maybe even these champagne pink Betsey Johnson’s sandals. Either way, you’ll look great at prom and can re-wear them if you have a summer wedding or formal graduation party to attend!

Another great and perhaps the easiest way to incorporate pink into your prom look is through makeup and nail polish. Most likely you’re going to want your lips to be a shade of pink or red anyway so why not go all out and choose something like “Conceited” lipstick from Younique. If you like something a bit more subtle, go for Younique’s “Loveable” lip gloss. For nails, pick up ColorClub’s “Endless” nail polish for a perfect shade that will complement any color and last you all weekend!

Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to the Best Self-Tanning Lotions

Self Tanning Lotion

Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to the Best Self-Tanning Lotions

Written by: Jenna Yesenosky

Every girl loves a good tan. Maybe it’s because a tan acts as a constant reminder of all the lazy days we spent soaking up the sun, or maybe it’s an unspoken contest, something we get to compare with our friends on the first day of school. Whatever the appeal is, a good tan is hard to find, especially when it’s 32 degrees and snowing outside. Whether you’re trying to get a good glow for prom, or you’re just ready to give your skin a wake up call without the worry of damaging UV rays, look no further. Here is Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to Self-Tanning Lotions, one for every scenario under the sun (pun intended).

If you’re looking for a gradual tan, try Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, a tried and true veteran, or Saint Tropez’s Gradual Tan Everyday Moisturizer if you’re looking to splurge a bit. These two self-tanners build gradually on your skin, leaving subtle color that will have people wondering how you got such a natural looking tan without ever going on vacation.

If you’re looking for a quick bronzing tan, try Victoria’s Secret Instant Bronzing Spray. This spray is great for when you’re looking to get a quick, 24 hour glow. Spray it on before you go out with your girls and wash it off at the end of the night. This product is great for anyone who wants to test the self-tanning waters before jumping in, or anyone who just needs a tan for one night. The results may be more fleeting, but less commitment and less hassle makes this product a go to for on-the-go.

If you’re looking for a bronzing suntan lotion, try Australian Gold’s line of suntan lotions and sprays. Not only do Australian Gold products smell like a Hawaiian vacation in a bottle, they also give a bit of color while protecting your skin from the sun’s rays (and premature wrinkles). The extent of Australian Gold products range from regular old suntan lotion, to bronzing sprays similar to the one above, to lotions with built in self-tanner. These convenient products knock out two birds with one stone: protecting you from a wicked sunburn while giving you the color you’re trying to achieve by laying in the sun in the first place.

If you’re looking for a nice face tanner, try Jergen’s Natural Glow Healthy Complexion Facial Moisturizer, the sister product of Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, and a drugstore favorite. If you’re worried about breaking out and you don’t mind spending a little more money, try Clinique Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion. Clinique products are notorious for being easy on the skin, and this product is no exception. Apply either of these lotions if you want an even tan all over, both face and body.

Whatever the occasion, whatever the reasoning, self-tanning is a lifesaver for proms and impromptu winter vacations alike. I know I’ll be breaking out my tanning products very soon, and I hope you will too, with the help of this guide to the best self-tanning lotions!

Floral Accessories to Rock this Winter

Perfect Pink Nail Polish to Rock this Winter

It’s no surprise that my favorite color is pink and my favorite season is summer. But unfortunately, despite my love for warmer months, I live on the East Coast and have to put up with grueling winters in exchange for lovely summer weather and my favorite seashore town.

During the summer, I rock pink everything. Pink bikinis, pink tank tops, pink flip-flops, and hot pink nail polish. Even the walls in my bedroom down the shore are pink. However, my NYC apartment is a different story and the main differences can be found in my closet. Instead of looking into a room of various shades of pink, my New York closet holds mostly black, grey, navy, and white apparel and accessories.

That being said, I still need a little bit of pink in my life no matter where I am or how cold it is outside. And the easiest way for me to always have some visible element of my favorite color is on my nails. This past summer I succeeded at finding the perfect shade of pink: Color Club’s “Flamingo.” But the neon/coral tints unfortunately do not lend themselves to colder days. So I went searching for a solution in the form of a perfect shade of pink polish that is subtle enough to complement a more subdued wardrobe.

And luckily I found it. Color Club’s “Blushing Rose” is my new go-to this winter. It’s light, opaque, and has a touch of a warm pink that works especially well with my favorite greys and navys. The best part is that it reads pink without screaming pink. And it’s light enough to disguise any last minute chipping that happens right before you go meet up with your besties! 🙂

Buy it here and get your pink-fix all winter!

Summer’s Fading but Your Tan Doesn’t Have to

Labor Day Weekend is probably the most bittersweet time of the summer. It’s so fun because it’s a long weekend so everyone is able to escape from school and enjoy the holiday by celebrating at their favorite seaside town with their friends and family. But if you’re like me and live in that seaside town all summer, it can get really nostalgic because you know it’s your last weekend before packing up the house and acknowledging that the next morning, summer will just be a memory.

There’s a lot to be sad about this weekend like leaving your friends, going back to school, going back to work, and abandoning the idea that “free time” meant “beach time.” So with all the wonderful things you are giving up, you also have to give up that perfect tan you worked so hard at achieving all summer long.

This is a rough concept because no one likes to look pale. Your tan went along with your mood and made you look healthier and livelier so the idea of watching that fade away with no control is super depressing. But lucky for you, I found a great bronzer that can help us all extend the life of summer as we keep moving forward into September.

I’ve tried SO many bronzers because I am naturally super pale and hate it. But my favorite one is Younique’s Beachfront Bronzer. You may know the company’s super popular 3D Fiber Lash Mascara (which is also amazing), but I was most pleased to finally find a bronzer that didn’t make me look orange and/or shiny two hours later. The bronzer is half matte and half shimmer, which gives you a subtle glow to bring out your inner radiance. It’s a little pricey ($32), but is totally worth it because Younique offers “The Love It” Guarantee, which means within 14 days of delivery, you can return it for a full value credit or refund!

Trust me, girls, this bronzer is for sure a summer ending necessity! You can also look through some of their other products here. Buy it and at least once summer’s over, your tan won’t be! 🙂

Scented Soaps to Keep the Spirit of Summer Alive

Every year in the first weekend of August, Stone Harbor, NJ hosts the Stone Harbor Arts & Crafts Festival. And every year, no matter how perfect of a beach day it is, I enlist one of my parents to drop me off at 80th street so I can roam the hundreds of booths of everything from homemade candies to beach décor to sea-inspired jewelry. (Also, every year I tell myself I won’t buy anything but by the time my parents come to pick me up, my arms are stacked with goody bags of things I just “had to have.”)

This year, as per usual, I hop out of the car at 9:00 am and begin my hunt. I make my first stop to pick up an iced coffee and then get started on my route. I was doing pretty well and did a loop around most of the tents and didn’t buy anything! That was until I hit the A House of Suds booth. Something about the beautiful display of pastel-colored soap bars lured me in and once I started smelling the prettiest colors, I couldn’t stop.

Of course another thing I love about the Stone Harbor Arts & Crafts Festival is also how incredibly nice everyone is. Therefore, it’s impossible to not start chatting with the shop owners. A House of Suds is no different. I was told all about the Goat’s Milk and Olive Oil soaps, the 18 (!) new scents, and the discount I could get if I bought three soap bars instead of just two. Hence, I was sold.

They have so many scents that it was hard to just choose three. But I landed on ones that I knew could keep the magic of summer alive even after Labor Day Weekend rolled around. They were Coconut Lime, Orange, and Calming Water. In the running were also Bamboo, Lavender, Sweet Strawberry, and Lemongrass. I’ll have to order those online once I run out.

Now that summer season is almost ending, I’m so glad I made my purchase because even when I have to leave my perfect seaside town, I’ll be able to jump in the shower and be transported back to summer scents. Check out A House of Suds soaps here and grab a couple bars to keep you daydreaming about summer vacation well into the fall!

Beach Hair Anywhere

When you’re spending all summer day attempting to soak in as much sun as possible these last few weeks of summer, sometimes you wind up staying at the beach well into the early evening. This is excellent strategy because pretty soon you’ll have to be back in school and you’ll want to reunite with all your friends with the best tan ever but it does cause one teeny, tiny, little problem…your hair.

If you’re brushing off the last particles of sand from your feet at 6 pm every night, then you’re left with very little time to primp prior to dinner and meeting up with your besties for some mini-golf and ice cream. But of course you need to look good just in case the pack of lifeguard cuties rolls by! So what to do!

Maybe you’re lucky enough to look half decent with wash and wear hair and if you are TRUST ME count your blessings. But if you’re like the rest of us and look more like a run-over porcupine with air-dried hair, then we need some major help in the form of excellent hair products to make us feel super confident if we run into our crush.

I’ve been through the ringer trying to find a good leave-in spray that will turn my damp, messy curls into dry, shiny beach waves and let me tell you, it has not been easy. A lot of hair products are not strong enough and often leave my hair with crunchy or slimy curls that make me want to jump right back in the shower and give it another go. Luckily, my best friend recently introduced me to Sexy Hair’s Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray and I am so glad she did!

I’m always a little skeptical when my friends with perfectly straight, shiny hair suggest hair products to me as if they know what it’s like to live with my out of control mane of frizzy curls but I am so happy I took the leap and tried this one. Ingredients include Argan Oil, Algae Extract, and Soy Protein (among others). Simply spray onto your damp hair and pretty soon, your mess of curls will turn into perfect beach waves! Top it off with Healthy Sexy Hair’s Soy Renewal Oil if you have time when it’s dry and you’re going to actually want to start wearing your hair like this on the reg instead of as a last resort!

Trust me on this one and check them out here and stay on the beach as long as you’d like today!

Perfect Pink Nail Polish

I’ve learned a lot of wonderful life lessons from my mom. One of which is to never leave the house without your nails done. This may seem silly (and it certainly is to an extent), but it’s really so important. You never know who you’re going to meet and it’s definitely difficult to take a girl with random chips of mint green polish on her nails seriously.

Because this idea has been engraved in my brain for years, I always make sure to have my nails covered in color (toes and hands). And in the summer, I absolutely love scouring the polish displays at my favorite salon to find the perfect shade of pink, which can be quite a difficult task due to the many options that are almost there but are either too orange, too purple, too translucent, too milky, too red, too wrong.

However, a couple weeks ago I FOUND IT. The most perfect shade of pink that screams summer in a bottle. Feeling like Goldilocks, I can confidently say that this color is just enough pink, just enough neon, with a perfect hint of coral to make you so happy every time you look at it. Plus, the touch of neon also makes you look tan—yay! Here it is, girls, my perfect summer shade of pink: Color Club’s Flamingo.

Buy it here and become obsessed like me and don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @pinklyperfect_inc 🙂
