Beyond the Boss: Behind the Scenes Into BHB’s January Beauty Box

pinkly.perfect.girl.boss

Being a #girlboss will always be my favorite title. This month we got to express that through curating Beyond Her Blush’s January beauty box! Beyond Her Blush isn’t like the typical subscription boxes out on the market now, which are often a mix of random samples that don’t take into consideration skin tone, hair texture, beauty preferences etc. Instead, Beyond Her Blush focuses each month’s box on a specific beauty trend and gives you 5-6 products to help achieve that look, all curated by celebrity stylists.

In perfect “New Year, New You” fashion, January 2017’s box is all about embracing your inner #girlboss and I feel SO lucky to have been able to curate it. I love being a girl boss and I was so excited to include some of our products in the box to pair with a metallic silver Essie nail polish and pink lipstick!

Below I’ve highlighted what PP products you can expect to receive in this month’s box and why they’re perfect for your boss lifestyle!

Girl Boss of the Week: Emily Dimant, Makeup by Emily Dimant

girl.boss.emily.dimant

Emily Dimant is one impressive Girl Boss. From getting licensed at age 18 to running a successful makeup business all while in school full-time, Emily is a great example of making your dreams happen. We sat down with Emily to learn about how she got started in the makeup industry, her biggest career challenge, and her advice for high school girls.

(Photo above by Hope Helmuth Photography www.hopehelmuth.com)

PP: Thanks for sitting with us, Emily! Tell us about what attracted you to the makeup industry.

Emily: I have always been a painter my whole life. In addition to makeup, I am also an illustrator, focusing on fashion and beauty illustration. I am happy to combine my love for both art and makeup.  I was also always a girly-girl! I loved playing with Barbies as a child and I always appreciated their fashion and beauty aesthetic. I decided to become a Pennsylvania licensed cosmetologist when I was still in high school, so I attended a vo-tech school half the day, and public school the other half. I was also working at a salon by age 15 getting my foot in the door of the beauty industry. After two years of hard work, I was licensed by the age of 18!

PP: That’s incredible to be so accomplished at such a young age! What was the best piece of advice you received in terms of working for yourself?

Emily: Never undercut or sell yourself short! Your rates and pricing should always be what you believe you deserve for the work you are doing. Do lots of research and be confident in how much you are charging, no matter what you are doing!

PP: Absolutely. What are your favorite types of shoots to work on or clients to have?

Emily: I absolutely love beauty and skincare shoots, so I can see my work in a high definition camera up close and personal. This allows me to critique my work and make myself a better makeup artist. My favorite types of clients are the ones who sit down in my chair, and say “do whatever, I trust you!” That makes my job easy and rewarding.

PP: I bet! But I assume there are also some challenges. What has been your biggest career challenge and how did you overcome it?

Emily: Definitely that I am a full-time student while running my own business. It is 100% possible through hard work and proper time management. I started this business when I was 18, and it is very difficult for people to take you seriously when you are young. I had to prove everyone wrong by showing that I am mature and professional. My clients always questioned my age when I was doing their makeup, but I showed them that age does not matter, but talent does!

PP: Definitely! I remember at our first shoot, I was so impressed with how young you were! What have you learned about yourself since you started?

Emily: I can handle anything. When a client is being rude or mean, I do not let it get to me! Sometimes people have bad days and a makeup artist’s job is to cheer them up by making them feel beautiful.  I have also learned how to be more understanding and appreciative of everyone in the customer service industry.

PP: What is your favorite makeup trend?

Emily: I love dewy and glowing skin. Clean, fresh skin is so in and it all starts with good skincare. I love using cream products all over the skin for that dewy look. Cream foundations, cream highlighters, and cream blushes applied with fingers just always look so amazing!

PP: Now you have me wanting to head to Sephora and try it out! Finally, what message would you give to high school girls in terms of beauty and confidence?

Emily: You do not need makeup to feel beautiful. Remember, trends will pass and while you may think that contouring is important now, you will realize how silly it is one day! I do not wear makeup regularly, because I feel comfortable in my skin! Makeup can clog your pores and cause breakouts. It’s super fun to wear out at night but it is not necessary every day. Your skin will thank you! You are beautiful without it and anyone who loves you will agree with that!

Treat Yo’Self: Finals are Over!

done.with.school.rewards

Written by: Sarah Felbin

Summer is here! No more tests, quizzes, or homework – and best of all, finals are finally over! After so much stressing and studying, everyone deserves a break… But your summer budget has to last until the end of August, so hiring Justin Timberlake for a backyard concert might not be the best idea. Instead, treat yourself with these fun, fabulous (pink!) finds, all for under $15!

Relaxing R&R

One of the best ways to relax is by amping up your bath time! (Yes, we said bath.) These products will help you get the most of your suds and bubbles, so you can enjoy being worry-free.

pink.flamingo.lush.cosmetics

Pink Flamingo Reusable Bubble Bar: $7.95 at Lush Cosmetics

If there’s a better way to capture summer in a few short words, we haven’t found it yet!

Pink Chiffon Shower Gel: $12.50 at Bath&Body Works

A lightly scented shower gel is just the thing for a fresh start to summer! (Shhh, don’t tell, but this one is perfect year-round!)

Pink Bath Bomb: $4.95 at Lush Cosmetics

Inspired by Audrey Hepburn, this sweet bath bomb is just the thing after a long day at the beach!

Bright Mani-Pedis

In the mood for a new shade? Any of these stunning pinks make for a majorly marvelous mani! Feeling bold? Go for a perfectly painted pedi instead, or mix and match for the ultimate summer combo!

Essie.pink.diamond.nail.polish

O.P.I. Strawberry Margarita: $6.85 at Walmart

This fun shade is a perennial favorite and comes in both a regular and a long-lasting formula for extra resistance against the sun, surf, and sand.

Essie Pink Diamond: $8.50 on Amazon.com

Shiny, shimmery, and bright, this pink is perfect for graduation parties, Sweet sixteens, and everything in between!

China Glaze Petal to the Metal: $3.77 on Amazon.com

No summer would be complete without the perfect coral polish! This vibrant shade just screams ‘summer,’ don’t you think?

Soft Waves

Hang on, not the kind you’re thinking of! While we can’t wait for sea breezes and ocean waves, what we really want is soft, wavy hair, the kind that makes mermaids jealous. These products will help protect your locks from harsh sunscreens and sea salt that can dry them out.

bed.head.after.party

TIGI Bed Head After Party Smoothing Cream: $12.21 on Amazon.com

With so many pool parties and barbecues to go to, it can be hard to keep up with your regular summertime hair routine. Opt for this one step system instead; the light formula leaves hair silky and shiny without weighing it down.

Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer: $10.00 at ULTA Beauty

This spray is a life-saver! Applied before blow-drying, it can help your hair dry faster and add shine. An added bonus? It also helps protect your hair against heat, which means healthier strands with maximum wow-factor.

Batiste Dry Shampoo in Floral Essences: $7.29 on Amazon.com

Can’t stop, won’t stop beaching it all summer long? This dry shampoo lets you keep going days after your last dip in the pool! Fresh hair + awesome scent = your best hair ever!

Must-Have Sunscreens for Summer

best.suntan.lotions

Written by: Maureen Devenny

Sunscreen is a necessity for healthy skin. But from potential breakouts to a distinctive smell to a greasy feeling on your skin, applying sunscreen can feel like a real chore. Luckily, we live in the year 2016, where there are plenty more options than the sunscreens we were slathered with as kids. Here are some new and improved sunscreens we can’t wait to try out for summer 2016. (And please remember to talk to your dermatologist about the sunscreen that is right for you).

neutrogena.sunscreen

Breakout Danger Zone

Summer can be a tricky time for breakouts, since limited sun exposure can help clear up acne, but the extra sweating you’re doing can clog those pores right back up. Protect your face from sun damage and pimples at the same time with Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen–it’s tried-and-true for a reason. Another option is the Murad Oil-Control Mattifying Sunscreen, which is sold as part of Murad’s Acne Control Starter Kit–this lotion not only fights acne with tea tree oil, but also mattifies to reduce shine. Sounds like a good deal to us!

sunscreen.not.greasy

Greasy Feeling

It’s hard to feel refreshed if you’re covered in greasy sunscreen. Luckily, MDSolarSciences Quick Dry Body Spray has you covered–literally!–and dry in no time. For the face, we like Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist, which controls shine and sets makeup. We love a product that multitasks!

sunscreen.smells.good

“Sunscreen Smell”

As a perfume person, it is heartbreaking when my fair skin forces me to douse myself in sunscreen over the summer and completely lose the scent of my perfume. But thank goodness that there are sunscreen options out there that don’t leave you smelling like Coppertone all summer! We love the Fresh Cucumber scent of Coola Sport Continuous Spray (also available in Tropical Coconut). Not only does it smell great, but the spray-on application gets you back to your great beach read just a little faster.

Happy sunbathing!

Best Summer Scents: Perfume Edition

Written by: Jenna Yesenosky

Nothing says summer like a fresh new perfume. Whether you’re smelling good for the date you’re going on later or trying to cover up the fact that you just ran two miles, perfume is a girl’s best friend. With so many different perfumes to try out, how can you know where to start? Never fear, Pinkly Perfect is here with our Best Summer Scents: Perfume Addition.

Stoked by Bethany Hamilton- My personal favorite, this perfume is perfect for a surfing girl! Created by the soul surfer herself, Bethany Hamilton, this scent smells like coconut and sunshine. One whiff of this and you’ll be transported to Honolulu, Hawaii, ready to ride the waves. Try Stoked here!

Pink Fresh & Clean by Victoria’s Secret- Nothing is more of a staple or more versatile than the infamous Fresh & Clean body spray. The vibe is right in the title; this perfume has a “fresh and clean” scent that works for any time of the day. Perfect for an on-the-go type of gal, just throw this in your beach bag and get ready to smell good all day. Try Fresh & Clean Body Mist here!

Viva La Juicy by Juicy Couture- Although a bit more expensive than others, this perfume by Juicy Couture is the epitome of the date-night scent. With hints of vanilla and jasmine, this sweet smell works great for a night on the boardwalk or ice cream at your favorite Jersey shore spot. This perfume is a bit more formal than the others, so pair it with a flirty dress and some cute sandals and get ready for compliments! Try Viva La Juicy here or at any department store.

Whether you’re looking for something warm like Stoked, crisp like Pink Fresh & Clean, or sweet like Viva La Juicy, each of these three awesome scents are major for summer. If you’re not already loyal to a signature scent, try all three of these out and see which is your favorite!

Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to the Best Self-Tanning Lotions

Self Tanning Lotion

Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to the Best Self-Tanning Lotions

Written by: Jenna Yesenosky

Every girl loves a good tan. Maybe it’s because a tan acts as a constant reminder of all the lazy days we spent soaking up the sun, or maybe it’s an unspoken contest, something we get to compare with our friends on the first day of school. Whatever the appeal is, a good tan is hard to find, especially when it’s 32 degrees and snowing outside. Whether you’re trying to get a good glow for prom, or you’re just ready to give your skin a wake up call without the worry of damaging UV rays, look no further. Here is Pinkly Perfect’s Guide to Self-Tanning Lotions, one for every scenario under the sun (pun intended).

If you’re looking for a gradual tan, try Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, a tried and true veteran, or Saint Tropez’s Gradual Tan Everyday Moisturizer if you’re looking to splurge a bit. These two self-tanners build gradually on your skin, leaving subtle color that will have people wondering how you got such a natural looking tan without ever going on vacation.

If you’re looking for a quick bronzing tan, try Victoria’s Secret Instant Bronzing Spray. This spray is great for when you’re looking to get a quick, 24 hour glow. Spray it on before you go out with your girls and wash it off at the end of the night. This product is great for anyone who wants to test the self-tanning waters before jumping in, or anyone who just needs a tan for one night. The results may be more fleeting, but less commitment and less hassle makes this product a go to for on-the-go.

If you’re looking for a bronzing suntan lotion, try Australian Gold’s line of suntan lotions and sprays. Not only do Australian Gold products smell like a Hawaiian vacation in a bottle, they also give a bit of color while protecting your skin from the sun’s rays (and premature wrinkles). The extent of Australian Gold products range from regular old suntan lotion, to bronzing sprays similar to the one above, to lotions with built in self-tanner. These convenient products knock out two birds with one stone: protecting you from a wicked sunburn while giving you the color you’re trying to achieve by laying in the sun in the first place.

If you’re looking for a nice face tanner, try Jergen’s Natural Glow Healthy Complexion Facial Moisturizer, the sister product of Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, and a drugstore favorite. If you’re worried about breaking out and you don’t mind spending a little more money, try Clinique Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion. Clinique products are notorious for being easy on the skin, and this product is no exception. Apply either of these lotions if you want an even tan all over, both face and body.

Whatever the occasion, whatever the reasoning, self-tanning is a lifesaver for proms and impromptu winter vacations alike. I know I’ll be breaking out my tanning products very soon, and I hope you will too, with the help of this guide to the best self-tanning lotions!

Summer’s Fading but Your Tan Doesn’t Have to

Labor Day Weekend is probably the most bittersweet time of the summer. It’s so fun because it’s a long weekend so everyone is able to escape from school and enjoy the holiday by celebrating at their favorite seaside town with their friends and family. But if you’re like me and live in that seaside town all summer, it can get really nostalgic because you know it’s your last weekend before packing up the house and acknowledging that the next morning, summer will just be a memory.

There’s a lot to be sad about this weekend like leaving your friends, going back to school, going back to work, and abandoning the idea that “free time” meant “beach time.” So with all the wonderful things you are giving up, you also have to give up that perfect tan you worked so hard at achieving all summer long.

This is a rough concept because no one likes to look pale. Your tan went along with your mood and made you look healthier and livelier so the idea of watching that fade away with no control is super depressing. But lucky for you, I found a great bronzer that can help us all extend the life of summer as we keep moving forward into September.

I’ve tried SO many bronzers because I am naturally super pale and hate it. But my favorite one is Younique’s Beachfront Bronzer. You may know the company’s super popular 3D Fiber Lash Mascara (which is also amazing), but I was most pleased to finally find a bronzer that didn’t make me look orange and/or shiny two hours later. The bronzer is half matte and half shimmer, which gives you a subtle glow to bring out your inner radiance. It’s a little pricey ($32), but is totally worth it because Younique offers “The Love It” Guarantee, which means within 14 days of delivery, you can return it for a full value credit or refund!

Trust me, girls, this bronzer is for sure a summer ending necessity! You can also look through some of their other products here. Buy it and at least once summer’s over, your tan won’t be! 🙂

Scented Soaps to Keep the Spirit of Summer Alive

summer.scented.soaps

Every year in the first weekend of August, Stone Harbor, NJ hosts the Stone Harbor Arts & Crafts Festival. And every year, no matter how perfect of a beach day it is, I enlist one of my parents to drop me off at 80th street so I can roam the hundreds of booths of everything from homemade candies to beach décor to sea-inspired jewelry. (Also, every year I tell myself I won’t buy anything but by the time my parents come to pick me up, my arms are stacked with goody bags of things I just “had to have.”)

This year, as per usual, I hop out of the car at 9:00 am and begin my hunt. I make my first stop to pick up an iced coffee and then get started on my route. I was doing pretty well and did a loop around most of the tents and didn’t buy anything! That was until I hit the A House of Suds booth. Something about the beautiful display of pastel-colored soap bars lured me in and once I started smelling the prettiest colors, I couldn’t stop.

Of course another thing I love about the Stone Harbor Arts & Crafts Festival is also how incredibly nice everyone is. Therefore, it’s impossible to not start chatting with the shop owners. A House of Suds is no different. I was told all about the Goat’s Milk and Olive Oil soaps, the 18 (!) new scents, and the discount I could get if I bought three soap bars instead of just two. Hence, I was sold.

They have so many scents that it was hard to just choose three. But I landed on ones that I knew could keep the magic of summer alive even after Labor Day Weekend rolled around. They were Coconut Lime, Orange, and Calming Water. In the running were also Bamboo, Lavender, Sweet Strawberry, and Lemongrass. I’ll have to order those online once I run out.

Now that summer season is almost ending, I’m so glad I made my purchase because even when I have to leave my perfect seaside town, I’ll be able to jump in the shower and be transported back to summer scents. Check out A House of Suds soaps here and grab a couple bars to keep you daydreaming about summer vacation well into the fall!

And don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @pinklyperfect_inc to see other ways I’m capturing the spirit of summer all year 🙂

Current Obsession: Sunburn Soap

sunburn.soap

Ok, let’s admit it. One of our summer goals is always to return to school in September with a pretty sweet tan that screams “I had so much fun at the beach this summer!!!!” Even if the last couple weeks of vacation were spent picking up extra hours at the Pancake House or frantically reading all five books from the summer reading list the week before school starts (sidenote: this is a completely judge-free zone, add the ENTIRE math packet and that was totally me), we want it to seem like all we were focusing on was having the best summer ever hanging with our besties and kissing cute boys on the ferris wheel.

With this goal however, also comes the evil reality that while laying out for 5 hours straight forcing yourself to withstand the extreme heat in the hopes of a noticeable deepening of skin-tone, we fall victim to a mysteriously-shaped blob of bright red burn inhabiting a sad part of the body that somehow missed the sunscreen application.

Not only does this completely mess up that even, perfect tan we were going for, but it also is extremely painful and (god forbid) can lead to peeling. Obviously the goal is ALWAYS to take sunscreen application extremely seriously to avoid this (here’s our picks for top self-tanners), but sometimes we just can’t help it and have to resort to other solutions. Which leads us into Pinkly Perfect’s current obsession: Sunburn Soap.

Instead of just pumping out some cold, green, gooey Aloe your mom bought three summers ago, try using Soap Shed’s Sunburn Soap. This is so much better than just using Aloe because it’ll prevent you from peeling/irritating the burn while you’re cleaning up from a day at the beach, instead of after you suffered through a painful shower trying to avoid further hurting the burned skin. The soap’s made of moisturizing shea and cocoa butter with some lavender oil to make it smell amazing too. Plus, it’s only $5 (yay!). Basically, this is an absolute must-have this summer. And the best part? Soap Shed also carries some awesome beach-inspired scented soap like “Key Lime Cream” and “Ocean Rain” so you can stock up on all your other soap needs!

Hope you enjoy Soap Shed’s Sunburn Soap as much as I do and remember to follow Pinkly Perfect on Instagram @pinklyperfect_inc 🙂
